How to Calculate Daily Broiler Chicken Rate, Cutting Loss & Profit Margin in India

·2 min read·ChickenPro Team

Complete formula guide for chicken dealers and shops: calculate live bird purchase rate, transit shrink, dressing yield loss (30-33%), and retail counter profit.

Every morning across India, broiler dealers and chicken centre owners check the day's paper rate to determine what to charge retail customers. However, pricing dressed chicken directly from the live rate without calculating yield loss and transit shrinkage is one of the quickest ways to lose money.

Understanding the exact formula between farm gate live rate, transit weight loss, and dressing loss is critical to protecting your daily operating margins.

Understanding the three inevitable losses in the chicken trade

1. Transit shrinkage: Broilers lose between 2% and 4% of body weight between lifting from the farm and unloading at the shop due to stress and dehydration.

2. Mortality: A small percentage of birds (typically 0.5% to 1.5%) may not survive long transit in hot weather, increasing the effective cost per surviving kg.

3. Dressing yield loss: Feathers, blood, head, and viscera account for 30% to 33% of a live bird's weight. That means a 2 kg live bird yields approximately 1.34 kg to 1.4 kg of dressed meat.

The live-to-dressed break-even calculation formula

To find your break-even cost per kg of dressed chicken: divide your landed live rate by the dressing percentage (typically 0.67 to 0.70).

For example: If your landed live bird cost is ₹100/kg, your break-even cost for dressed chicken is ₹100 ÷ 0.68 = ₹147/kg before factoring in shop rent, labour, ice, and electricity. Selling dressed meat at anything below ₹160-₹170/kg in this scenario would result in a net loss.

How ChickenPro automates daily rate & closing profit calculations

Manually recalculating these yields every time the morning broiler rate fluctuates leads to guesswork and missed profits during rapid market swings.
